I think perhaps what older games did better than newer FPS games, they gave us a better sense of the illusion of freedom, a couple ways to go around, secrets to find and player=satisfied. Now its somewhat more rare. Instead greater linearity provides a tighter story, don't miss a single thing the developer wants us to see.
