Games like COD owe their existance to Wolfenstien 3D, the first well known fps, and DooM, the series that refined the fps genre. To say any game is better than its ancestors may be true(in terms of advancements), but the classics are what made said advancements possible. without the wisdom that laid the foundation for the newer games, these better games would be nothing. this is what makes classics like DooM better. What makes them Greater than the newer games is the community that still play these old games long after a newer game comes out. no one really talks about Call of Duty 2. Not many people play online with random players. however if you pull up doomseeker, look up mods, or look at groups on steam, you will find a huge community for DooM that is still growing.
