Half-Life : MMod

Mod review

What an amazing way to replay Half-Life! The effects of the explosions and shooting were greatly improved! You can now select the chapter you want to play with a simple but efficient menu. The weapon models and animations are a lot nicer now, some of the weapons include optional mods, like suppressors and laser sights. There are many optional settings for you to customize the experience, like the difficulty, first person legs, effects and more. You've done it again, Mark! Stay safe my friend.

Half-Life: Sum

Mod review

You play Half-Life: Sum as the grunt Jane Doe, starting in a room very injured, watching a female assassin finishing a scientist. She then shoot Jane and leave her to die, not realizing Jane was still alive and hungry for revenge.

This mod is amazing, it has very well detailed maps, with amazing visuals and lighting. The sound design here is pretty good, it feels dark and hopeless, in a devastated Black Mesa full of bodies, blood, and abominations. The way the gonomes are introduced is nice, seeing only their back, while devouring a poor survivor in a bloodbath.

It's a pretty balanced mod, I had a lot of fun playing on medium difficulty, without dying once through the entire mod. However, the hard mode was kinda unbalanced and boring, the enemies were too spongy, vortigaunts attack too fast, and the fact that they teleport in front of you, usually in linear corridors, avoiding damage can be very annoying.

There is little to no messages on the screen, but when you reach some chapters, a lot of text is displayed, with some information about your next mission. The time to read them is too short, even if you try to read as fast as you can.

There are many buttons and doors you can interact with, but for some odd decision, some of them you need to press the use key, and others you just need to touch. This usually happens with both doors and buttons, it's very inconsistent and almost killed me a few times. I was running from a horde of aliens to reach an elevator, I started to press the button like crazy, but nothing happened. The thing is, all I had to do was to, well, touch it.

Not nitpicking, but there is a bathtub at Jane's home where, if you get into it while crouching, you get stuck, and can see the toilet flicking like crazy. The only way to get out is by reloading a save.

This mod is very good, with many beautiful places to look at. It's not too long or too short, maybe around 2 to 3 hours of gameplay. It's really worth your attention, give it a shot.

Half-Life: Urbicide

Mod review

In Urbicide you play as Bruce, a man stuck in a war between the aliens and the military. Worried with his fiancée, Rebecca, he decides to investigate the outside area and finds the body of his former colleague. Having some military training, he goes through the city to find his love and get the hell out of there.

This mod is very pretty with very well detailed and designed areas, the soundtracks really sell a devastating and dangerous war zone. The rooms you visit are quite interesting to look at, I've found myself stopping just to appreciate the environments, the brush work is amazing. It has many custom textures from mods like Nightwatch and Poke646, which gives that modern feel to the mod. You'll feel like playing Echoes. The scripted sequences are very well done, they took me some time to watch them all.

The mod is not just flowers, though, some design choices are quite odd. Many switches and buttons are hard to find, they are very bland and don't have anything special to help the player know it's the interactive one, because yes the non-interactive ones also looks like them, it's inconsistent. Some buttons work, some don't, there's no difference between them besides the text on the screen with the protagonist's thoughts. Maybe a sprite, a different texture/prefab or some lighting could improve these parts.

The mod is very well-balanced, you don't have armor, only health. The monsters also have less HP, so both can die pretty fast. The thing is, some scenarios are so chaotic you will have many enemies attacking you because you were paying attention to the explosions and stuff happening around you. This kind of situation was uncommon for me, but it's something to consider since it creates unnecessary deaths.

In some circumstances, the protagonist will talk to himself to do something. For example, to jump into a pile of trash, and next to it there is a dumpster, also full of trash, but if you jump into the dumpster, you die. Something similar happens when you need to make a jump to reach a window, if you go to the side the developer doesn't want you to, you will die because of an invisible wall. Give more hints for the player or just don't allow the player to kill himself that way, maybe with invisible walls, or by a rebar from a destroyed area blocking that specific path.

Overall it's a very sweet mod, with over 2 hours of gameplay, you should definitely give it a try!

Half-Life : Echoes

Mod review

I just love this mod so much, it's so fun, pretty and well crafted! It gave me many good memories playing with my friends through Sven-Coop, introduced a friend to gold source mapping and probably many more people out there.

The only thing I miss in this mod is custom weapons. Even though you changed their sounds, models and ammo capacity, a different feeling for them would make this mod even more unique for me. Of course this is just nitpicking and personal preference.

Military Duty

Mod review may contain spoilers

This mod is very nice, simple but fun. Level design is ok, it could be better. Voice acting was sometimes good and sometimes very amateur. I enjoyed it from start to finish. However, somethings bothered me a little bit.

At the start of the game, I completely missed the knife, I reached a point where I said to myself "Man, I totally missed a melee weapon", because of course you don't kill baby headcrabs with a pistol hehe, right? This can be avoided, for example, by putting some planks or boxes blocking the entrance, and putting a knife or crowbar next to it.

The maker should take care when building a place that looks explorable, but it actually isn't. The part where you fall into a waterfall at Black Mesa, I've died two or three times trying to get on that little place with a dead scientist. There wasn't an indicator that said "Hey, it's deadly here", it's not far enough to get you killed.

Ropes... Like the idiot I am, I usually just keep jumping around while exploring the maps I play. There was an eletric wire hanging on the ceiling, I guess it was a rope since I got stuck on it and died. Even though it was my fault, you shouldn't use things like ropes on dangerous places, to avoid this kind of situation.

At the end of the game, I got stuck on the elevator, forcing me to reload an older save. I've played on Steam. Still, the ending was pretty dope, lots of enemies to kill and marines to assist you, just like Field Intensity. Please, more of it! For a first mod it is pretty neat, hope to see more from the author!

Half-Life Invasion

Mod review may contain spoilers

Ok, starting with the good things first. This mod is cool, has many custom weapons, a dismenberment system that's hella cool, different rockets for the RPG, a drivable tank, great level design for the most part, subtitles with different languages to choose from, you can really see they put a lot of time and effort into it.

Sadly, this mod has a LOT of problems. It's not well balanced, you'll find many enemies at once, shooting you through walls, sometimes even killing themselves. There are new npcs, one is the RPG guy, he's not only a bullet sponge, but will keep launching guided rockets at you, and won't care for their own lives to kill you. Another npc is the sniper, it's kinda funny, they'll either kill you in one hit, or will miss repeatedly, they are VERY annoying, especially because of how they are positioned on the maps.

Some levels were made in a way that, no matter what you do, you'll take damage, like something exploding near you, radiation damaging you, you'll die at least once because of stuff like that. There are also the puzzles, they're so annoying and a waste of time. Some machines you need to interact with take too much time to do what they're supposed to.

The drivable tank, NEVER SAVE WHILE DRIVING IT, I loaded a save when I was already inside the tank, but my own tank was running over me for some reason, I just kept reloading my save until it stopped. You can also get it stuck on some places forever, be careful. Also the aiming, it's not good, and the mounted machinegun is so inaccurate and slow it's useless.

Now about the weapons, the sniper rifle, it's very slow to switch to it, also you can't walk while aiming. It deals good damage but it's so bad to use it. The RPG is also a pain in the *** to deal with, you can't control your rockets, you need to use its autoaim system, it's annoying and unnecessary.

Talking a little about Black Mesa and Xen, going back to Black Mesa was cool, and would be better if not for these new enemies, man there's a difference between annoying and challenging. You'll encounter "flying snarks" that release a shock attack, they are fast and come in great numbers, they keep tasering you until you die or kill them. There's also another flying, bigger enemy that's hard to aim and hit, deals a lot of damage and is very annoying to fight with.

I don't know what to say about this, but cheats like god mode and noclip crash the game for some reason. I don't know if it's intentional or just a bug. Well played, devs.

This mod is not all bad, just make sure to play on medium or easy, don't be ashamed to do that. This mod needed more testing and care when it comes to game design. Even though I'm being harsh with this mod, it came more than ten years ago, and I'd probably give it a 10 back then due to how advanced this mod is.

Half-Life 2 Dublado PT-BR
