I like to mod games like TimeSplitters 2 and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. I'm a fan of first-person shooters, platformers, and top-down action games.

They Hunger: Relit

Mod review

A fantastic overhaul of a mod that was already great. Relit's adjustments affect They Hunger at all levels. Being able to choose an episode without knowing which map ID to use in the dev console is nice. The achievements are fun to pursue, aside from the "carry an object to the episode's end" ones. The survival mode is also chaotic fun.

The weapon changes make up my favorite part of the mod. The arsenal here fits the 1950s atmosphere, complete with rebalances to better reflect the real-life inspirations and force the player to better conserve their ammo. Most came from Day of Defeat, but I enjoyed the weapon variety and the way it worked in features like impact grenades and double shotgun blasts.

The enemies have some slight adjustments to fit the rebalance. The undead police are no longer insanely accurate with their pistols. The electrical skeletons can also revive each other, requiring you to strategize taking down groups of them. The final boss fight is still too spongey, but it's beatable if you conserve your ammo and land your shots.

It's a fun rework of a mod that was already work playing. You'll appreciate the changes more if you've already played They Hunger, though. If you're playing it for the first time, stick with the vanilla version. If you're planning to revisit the mod, I would highly recommend playing Relit.

Manhunt 2 MOD - Project Darkhunt

Mod review

A highly challenging MH2 mod that forces you to rethink strategies and be more cautious thanks to higher damage values. Gunfights are lethal and melee weapons are powerful compared to the vanilla version. It makes stealth feel more rewarding and turns any confrontation with a gun into a life-or-death thrill.

However, stability issues hinder it in later levels. Crashes can occur if you restart a level too much. The picket execution in Domestic Disturbance guarantees a crash. There was also a crash early on in Personality Clash when finding the syringe.

There are also strange bugs with handgun executions. Enemy corpses are left hovering in the air for other hunters to see. The incorrect audio also plays for them. Some levels are frustratingly hard due to the changes, such as the initial two sections of Assassination and the later areas of Release Therapy.

Still, it's an entertaining mod that shakes up how you would normally play MH2. I would recommend giving it a shot!

PlayFreeGO

Mod review

A decent mod hampered by horrible balancing issues. The damage dealt by weapons is all over the place, making the best options hard to predict. The Anti-Tank's UMP-45 shreds most enemies, while the Medic's SKS requires 6 or more bodyshots to put down a single target. Pistols are borderline useless, and even the Desert Eagle is crippled by its high recoil and 3 shots to kill. The variety among loadouts makes up for same factions being used across all maps.

Entropy : Zero - Uprising

Early access mod review

A high-quality Half-Life 2 mod that goes a cut above the first Entropy Zero. The combat is quick and brutal, the puzzles are infrequent but nicely made, and the Civil Protection perspective of the Uprising is well-handled. The inclusions of EZ2 content like the MP5K and Heavy Rebels are nice bonuses. The soundtrack is solid, especially the combat music (which often steals the show).

The difficulty can be fairly unforgiving, though, and you'll probably find yourself save-scumming at certain points like the Rebel sentry nest. The choice system is also scarcely used and abruptly introduced, meaning that you might make your 1st of 2 story choices without realizing it. The consequences seem pointless, since the decisions to remember your past or get more armor are made irrelevant by your PCV's armor total decreasing throughout the story.

It's still an excellent mod, and I would highly recommend it to Half-Life 2 fans, Entropy: Zero fans, and people who enjoy mods where you play as the Combine.

RazorMoon

Mod review

Razormoon is a well-crafted beta restoration mod created by someone who cares a lot about Manhunt 2 and its development history.

The new textures add extra crispness to levels. The restored beta hunter models outclass many of their vanilla counterparts, especially the Red Kings and Project Militia. Concepts like the red-eyed Project Militia and the Revolver in Best Friends go the extra mile in recreating the pre-release atmosphere of MH2.

My criticisms are centered on specific development choices. The cut firearm executions are not restored for some reason, despite other mods having done this before. The crosshair's execution level is small and tough to read. Also, the weapon icons lack the color grades that distinguish them normally, which can make it tough to determine which class each item belongs to.

I'd highly recommend trying this mod out, especially if you're curious about the Manhunt 2 Beta and Rockstar Vienna's original plans for the game. Don't expect any of the 3 cut levels to appear here, but that's probably not possible due to modding limitations. You'll be getting a revamped experience of the vanilla levels instead, with surprises like a few reworked puzzles and factions appearing in unexpected-but-fitting places.

Gears of Spec Ops Assault Recon

Mod review

I enjoy the weapon rebalances and how this makes Spec Ops a faster-paced shooter! You really have to rethink strategies when dealing with stronger guns and quicker enemies. The M4A1's rework makes it a ludicrously fun addition to your arsenal.

Battleground 44

Mod review

One of the highest-quality BF2 mods that I've ever played. The breadth of content is unreal. The sound design is great, the variety of factions and weapons is deep, and the gunplay is a good mix of realistic and entertaining. The PIAT crashes the game (give the British the M1 Bazooka to fix this), and a few levels don't load (just delete them), but it's otherwise a fantastic mod worth playing.

Half-Life 2 Beta Minimalist Mod

Mod review

It's okay. The jokes are pretty funny, but it's pretty lacking content-wise. You'll finish it in less than an hour, and most of that time will be spent walking from start to finish with no combat or puzzles.

I was hoping for a comedy mod with some good gameplay elements, but they're scarce. It's basically just HL2 beta skins over HL1 enemies and weapons placed in some simple levels.

There's some good detail in how the comedy is handled, though. Some of the more obscure and surreal jokes got me cracking up.

Half-Life: Field Intensity

Mod review

A high-quality mod that feels on-par with Opposing Force and Blue Shift. The ending is somewhat disappointing, but the entire experience makes up for it. The variety of level types, enemies, and weapons makes for a thrilling adventure.

China AT War

Early access mod review

A flawed but sincere mod that cleverly reworks the campaign missions to fit the 2nd Sino-Japanese War. Not every addition works well, like the Lee-Enfield and Type 11 LMG, but most of the new guns are fun to use and the new models look nice. The enemy rebalance makes for an additional challenge to WAW's campaign.
